Thyroid Q & A

What function does my thyroid perform?

Your thyroid gland is a part of your endocrine system, which informs and affects virtually all of the metabolic functions within your body. It’s a small butterfly-shaped gland that wraps around the front of your trachea, just below your Adam’s apple.

This gland manufactures a group of hormones collectively referred to as thyroid hormones. If too much or too little of these hormones are produced, widespread symptoms can occur.

What are some conditions that affect the thyroid?

Numerous medical issues can alter normal thyroid function. Some examples include:

  • Thyroid nodule, an abnormal mass in the gland that sometimes affects hormone production
  • Thyroid cancer, an uncommon and highly curable form of cancer
  • Hyperthyroidism, or excessive hormone production
  • Hypothyroidism, or low hormone production
  • Thyroiditis, or inflammation of the thyroid
  • Graves disease, an autoimmune condition caused by thyroid overstimulation
  • Goiter, inflammation in the thyroid

Thyroid conditions can cause a wide range of symptoms and can be challenging to diagnose. Depending on the information gleaned from your exam and a discussion of symptoms, Dr. Jeereddy will determine which diagnostic tools are appropriate.

Options include ultrasound imaging, thyroid scans, hormone level testing, a biopsy, or testing to look for signs of an autoimmune disorder. Once more information is available regarding the source of your symptoms, Dr. Jeereddy develops your customized treatment plan.

What can be done to treat thyroid issues?

There are several ways to treat thyroid conditions. One approach involves using medication to slow the overproduction of thyroid hormone. Radioactive iodine treatments can treat an overactive thyroid gland. External radiation is an option for treating thyroid cancer.

For hypothyroidism, daily oral medication can provide supplemental thyroid hormone as needed. In some cases, surgery is the best treatment path and can remove all or a portion of your thyroid gland.

Dr. Jeereddy will discuss all available treatment options with you in detail. You’ll have everything you need to make an informed decision about your treatment path, and you’ll have the support of the Kenilworth Primary Care team as you navigate treatment.

If your treatment requires a referral to a specialist, Dr. Jeereddy can help you find a great match and will coordinate your care to ensure a seamless return to primary health services once treatment is complete.

That process begins with an initial appointment, which can be booked online or over the phone.
